Friends, family and fellow firefighters are gathering on Staten Island today for the funeral of Lieutenant Gordon Ambelas.
He was killed over the weekend, after responding to a fire on the 19th floor of a housing development in Brooklyn. The fire was blamed on an air conditioner cord that was caught between a bed and the wall.
The 40 year old Ambelas is described as a hero, with colleagues saying he recently helped save a child who was stuck in a roll up gate.
Hundreds are expected to turn out for the funeral, leading to street closures today on Staten Island.
Ambelas leaves behind a wife and two children.
